The New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 to take a 2-0 lead in the National League Championship Series. Kansas City will see the Blue Jays in Toronto tonight at 8. The Royals lead the series 2-0.
NFL:
On Sunday, the Jets topped Washington 34-20, Cincinnati bested Buffalo 34-21, and it was New England over Indianapolis 34-27. Elsewhere Pittsburgh beat Arizona 25-13, Detroit won against Chicago in overtime 37-34, Denver edged Cleveland in overtime 26-23, Houston defeated Jacksonville 31-20, Minnesota trumped Kansas City 16-10, Miami blasted Tennessee 38-10, Carolina bested Seattle 27-23, San Francisco beat Baltimore 25-20, and Green Bay topped San Diego 27-20.
The Giants face the Eagles tonight in Philadelphia at 8:30.
NHL:
In the NHL, New Jersey skated past the Rangers in overtime 2-1, St. Louis doubled up Winnipeg 4-2, Anaheim beat Minnesota 4-1, Edmonton edged Vancouver in overtime 2-1, and it was Los Angeles over Colorado 2-1.
NBA:
In NBA preseason play, Brooklyn beat Philadelphia 92-91, Toronto defeated Cleveland 87-81, Memphis topped Minnesota 90-68, Oklahoma City won against Denver 111-98, Miami bested Atlanta 101-92, and it was Portland over Utah 116-111.
NASCAR:
Joey Logano won his second straight Chase race, spinning out Matt Kenseth with five laps remaining at Kansas Speedway to potentially spoil his rival's championship hopes.
Kenseth kept trying to block Logano with less than 20 laps to go. But when they hit lapped traffic, Logano ran into Kenseth's left rear and sent him for a spin entering Turn 1.
Logano pulled away from fellow Chase contender Denny Hamlin on the restart.
Kenseth led 153 laps but wound up 14th, leaving him last among the 12 drivers still alive in the Chase heading to Talladega, the final race in the "contender" round.
PGA:
Emiliano Grillo has won his PGA Tour rookie debut. The Argentine captured the Frys.com Open by holing a 25-foot birdie putt for a 3-under 69 before beating Kevin Na on the second playoff hole. Grillo missed a 3-foot birdie try on the first extra hole but sank a 10-foot birdie to win it. Grillo finished regulation at 15 under. Jason Bohn, Justin Thomas and Tyrone Van Aswegen tied for third at 14 under.
Bernhard Langer rallied to win the San Antonio Championship for his second victory of the year and 25th overall on the Champions Tour. The 58-year-old shot a final round 7-under 65 for a three-stroke victory over Scott Dunlap who posted a 68. Langer had eight birdies and one bogey Sunday to finish at 12-under 204.
LPGA:
Lexi Thompson shot a final-round 3-under 69 to break out of a crowded pack and win the LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship. The 20-year-old finished at 15 under par, good for a one-shot win over Yani Tseng and Sung Hyun Park. It was Thompson's second win of the year. Lydia Ko missed a chance to take the top spot in the world, finishing with a 72 that dropped the 18-year-old South Korean-born New Zealander into a tie for fourth at 13-under.
MLS:
Mike Grella scored in 7 seconds for the fastest goal in MLS history and the New York Red Bulls beat the Philadelphia Union 4-1 on Sunday to earn the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Grella raced to the ball and attacked the open lane after flat-footed midfielder Michael Lahoud allowed the initial backpass to roll past him. With Steven Vitoria backpedaling, Grella juked left and sent a left-footed shot deflecting off the defender and past goalkeeper Andre Blake. Tim Cahill scored the previous fastest goal at 8 seconds in the Red Bulls' 3-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo on Oct. 20, 2013.
Grella also scored in the 17th minute to give New York (17-10-6) a 3-0 lead.
Wright-Phillips added his 16th goal of the season on a right-footed volley in the fourth minute. Kemar Lawrence scored his first MLS goal to make it 4-0 just before the half.
The Red Bulls are tied with FC Dallas in the Supporters' Shield race for the overall regular-season title with one game left. Next Sunday, New York is at Chicago, and FC Dallas will finish at home against San Jose.
Sebastien Le Toux scored for the Union (9-17-7) in the 55th minute.
FIFA:
Michel Platini says he had no written contract for the $2 million payment from FIFA in 2011.
Risking further ethics sanctions by breaking confidentiality rules, Platini tells French daily Le Monde that the extra pay for his job advising FIFA President Sepp Blatter from 1998-2002 was "a thing between two men."
On Friday, Blatter told a Swiss broadcaster the deal being investigated by Swiss prosecutors as a "disloyal payment" from FIFA funds was a "gentlemen's agreement."
Platini and Blatter are appealing against their 90-day suspensions.
The FIFA ethics committee has in recent cases imposed strict bans when soccer officials discussed their cases in the media.
Platini tells Le Monde "it's shameful to be dragged through the mud."
Fantasy Sports:
The two titans of the daily fantasy sports world are out of Nevada after regulators there said the sites need gambling licenses but DraftKings and FanDuel are now asking its Nevada customers to sign online petitions urging state lawmakers to legalize the contests in the state.
The sites are facing similar scrutiny and legal determinations in other states across the country.
DraftKings said in its email to customers it would work to ensure Nevada residents could play on the site again soon.
In Nevada, the Gaming Control Board says the sites constitute gambling has said they can operate in the state, just as long as they get a license that involves an intense background investigation of the companies and their leaders.
