The Pittsfield, Massachusetts Police Department has established a safe exchange zone at its headquarters.
Lieutenant Gary Traversa says the initiative reflects a growing trend around the nation, and was requested through the city government.
“It would be us providing the public with an area within the department where internet purchase exchanges – weather it’s Craigslist or Marketplace – where exchanges of small items can be made within the department in areas that are public and monitored by our on-duty personnel,” he told WAMC.
The zone is already in effect, but police stress any illegal goods, narcotics, firearms, alcohol, or large items are not permitted.
The Pittsfield Police Department is located at 39 Allen Street.
