Matthew Fowler On Musical 'Beginning'

The word intimate is overused when describing music, especially in the singer-songwriter genre, but our guest Matthew Fowler takes you into his home on his debut album Beginning — literally.

The 20-year-old Fowler recorded the album over a period of years in his family’s Orlando kitchen, capturing his striking voice and cozy songwriting that to my ears recalls everyone from Dylan and Paul Simon to Glen Hansard.

Fowler has also recorded an EP with Reggie Williams called “Bring a Friend,” the name of the current tour that is taking him around the country — appropriate for a young artist with two songs named “Leaving Home.”

A lifelong resident of the Capital Region, Ian joined WAMC in late 2008 and became news director in 2013. He began working on Morning Edition and has produced The Capitol Connection, Congressional Corner, and several other WAMC programs. Ian can also be heard as the host of the WAMC News Podcast and on The Roundtable and various newscasts. Ian holds a BA in English and journalism and an MA in English, both from the University at Albany, where he has taught journalism since 2013.
