Massachusetts' Transportation Secretary Richard Davey, who oversees the state's highways and public transit as well as other agencies, is stepping down after three years on the job.Davey has been the state’s transportation secretary since 2011. He says he plans to travel with his wife and then look for a new job in the private sector.

His last day will be Oct. 31.

Davey says one of the things he's most proud of is winning back public trust, which had plummeted in the wake of cost overruns and construction errors associated with the Big Dig highway project.

Gov. Deval Patrick called Davey a key member of his team and instrumental in creating efficient transportation systems and a growing economy.

Highway Administrator Frank DePaola will replace Davey.
