It turns out Thomas Bull wasn't much of a patriot after all.
A park in the Orange County hamlet of Campbell Hall is named after Bull, a prominent landowner in the 18th century.
During a 13-year period that ended in 2005, thousands of people would gather at Thomas Bull Memorial Park for the community's big Fourth of July bash. But a local history buff says the Independence Day celebrations were held in a park named for a man who was loyal to the British.
James Flannery of nearby Montgomery tells the Times Herald-Record of Middletown (http://bit.ly/1dCcEjf ) that he found old records from the Revolutionary War that show Bull was jailed for being a loyalist who opposed independence for the 13 colonies.
Flannery says he has alerted county officials so they can tell Bull's history correctly.
