House Approves VA Appeals Bill

A bill that updates the VA’s appeals process has passed the U.S. House.

The Veterans Appeals Improvement and Modernization Act, which was approved unanimously by the House Tuesday, would overhaul the appeals process – where some veterans have waited five years or more for a decision on regional claims.

Democratic Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty, from Connecticut’s 5th House District, authored the bill. She said on the House floor it will mark the first significant update to the process in 30 years.

“With a new process created under this bill, if it’s properly implemented, many veterans would see a clearer, definitive appeals decision in as little as a year,” Esty says.

The bill would allow veterans to enter the new appeals process if they have a request pending.
