Eagle Street in North Adams, Massachusetts will be upgraded this month as city officials work to make it an attractive social space for residents.

The goal of the Eagle Street Initiative is to revitalize storefronts with new signs, add social spaces and art projects, and improve pedestrian safety. Most importantly, according to Mayor Richard Alcombright, it will attract business.

“Kind of the gateway to our downtown,” Alcombright says.

But some complain it’s too expensive to rent on Eagle Street. And there are a few vacant storefronts.

“If that’s the case, then landlords, I mean, do need to sharpen their pencils to attract good, quality tenants,” Alcombright says.

The initiative is funded by a $25,000 matching MassDevelopment grant. Private donations exceeded the grant amount, bringing in more than $35,000 for the project.
