An Adams, Massachusetts man is free on $25,000 bail after pleading not guilty Wednesday to charges stemming from a fatal hit-and-run last week in Adams.

David Sookey Jr., 61, is due back in court next month. He is charged in the death of 85-year-old Theresa Marby of Adams whose body was found on Dean Street February 16.

The Berkshire Eagle reports Marby was the longtime president of Burnette-Bednarz Post 1995, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and organized many events supporting veterans.

Sookey is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal car accident and obstructing a police investigation. The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office says a condition of Sookey’s bail is that he not operate a motor vehicle during the pendency of the case. He is due back in Northern Berkshire District Court March 19.
