The commentary I delivered over the radio on January 27, 2023 began with these words: “You have no doubt heard about the debt ceiling issue, right? Well, The Debt Ceiling law itself is UNCONSTITUTIONAL.” Given that I have much more space here to develop the arguments than in a four-minute radio address, I am going to delay explaining why it’s unconstitutional and making my recommendation to President Biden in order to give some background. Let’s start with definitions and the law.

I assume all listeners at least know about the riveting testimony of former White House Aide, Cassidy Hutchinson, before the January 6 Committee that was broadcast on TV last June. Many saw it live, still more have seen it since on You Tube.

Despite the jargon and inside the beltway focus, the fight in Congress over the budget is important.

Michael Eric Dyson is known to many as a television commentator. But long before he became one, he had amassed a vast array of achievements. Ordained as a Baptist Minister at the age of 19, he went on to receive a Ph D in religion from Princeton University. He has a list of publications as long as your arm and he is currently Centennial Chair and University Distinguished Professor of African American and Diaspora Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at Vanderbilt University as well as University Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Society at Vanderbilt’s Divinity School.

The election returns indicate that New York has lost at least four currently Democratic seats in Congress to Republicans. If the total Republican number in the House ends up at 221, then those four seats would have given the Democrats a slim one-vote majority. The blame game started immediately.

This is my last commentary before the mid-term elections. In researching the issues I came across a very detailed analysis of a series of roll-call votes in the House of Representatives. It was created by the writer, Richard Greene. I believe his research pin-points important differences between the Democrats and Republicans.

Back in 2016, filmmaker Michael Moore went on a national television show (Real Time with Bill Maher) and predicted that Donald Trump would win the Presidential election. Now in fact, EVERYBODY (Trump himself included) thought he would lose to Hilary Clinton but Moore sensed something in the sort of people he grew up with in Michigan --- a dissatisfaction with the way things were going after 8 years of Obama and an even more significant dissatisfaction with Clinton’s candidacy. Unfortunately, Moore was right – even though Clinton won the popular vote.

I live in New York State. It is a safe blue state. I have to travel out of state to work to elect Democrats who are the gate keepers against the MAGA fascists taking over Congress and Governors’ offices. There are people of my generation who are not in a position to make such trips. Thus, I was very pleased to discover three organizations who are doing very good work in the current election cycle. These groups, I can support from afar. The three are VoteRiders.com, the Movement Voter Project and Seed the Vote.

What has the recently averted Railroad Strike got to do with the difficulty of finding workers in fast food restaurants? To explain the connection, I have to tell a personal story.

Even at the ripe of age of 79, I am living proof of the old adage, “You learn something new every day.” Recently, I was visiting someone who had a solar cooker on her deck. I don’t think I’d ever seen one and wonder if I ever had heard of them. I learned so much, I decided I wanted to share some information with you listeners.
