Backlash Over Common Core Extends To US Catholic Schools

Pat Bradley/WAMC

The backlash against standardized testing is rippling through some Roman Catholic schools. Those schools are already balancing the college-driven Common Core learning standards against their institutions' spiritual goals.

The Diocese of Albany, New York, announced recently that it will reduce the frequency of the Common Core-aligned tests while sticking with the standards.

Superintendent Michael Pizzingrillo says it'll help parents distinguish between the standards, which spell out needed skills, and the turmoil surrounding testing.

The decision coincides with a call by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for "a total reboot" of the Common Core after his state became the epicenter of anti-testing sentiment.

Sister John Mary Fleming of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops says the current debate has created an opportunity for Catholic schools to review their mission.
