Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation to ensure orders of protection in domestic sex assaults are extended through their attacker's probation term.
The governor's office says those orders have often expired before probation ended. The law signed Tuesday takes effect in 30 days and will apply to assaults after that. It requires a 10-year order of protection in cases where a felony sexual assault conviction involving a family member includes probation.
With misdemeanor convictions, it requires a six-year order of protection.
Assembly member Amy Paulin, lead sponsor, says it corrects an inconsistency in the law and provides victims greater protection.
