NY Expanding HIV-Prevent Effort To Fund Support Services

wikipedia.org

New York is expanding efforts to prevent the spread of the virus that causes AIDS by funding counseling, testing and other support for infected patients prescribed the effective drug.

State health officials have taken several steps already to boost diagnosis and treatment HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, with antiviral medications.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has called for virtually ending the disease's spread and related AIDS deaths by 2020.

One drug has proven effective in preventing the spread of HIV to sex partners, and most private insurance and Medicaid will pay for that daily pill.

Health officials say they will reimburse eligible providers for the support services needed to keep high-risk individuals taking the medication, which they say will be provided to uninsured and underinsured through the manufacturer's program.
