Retiring Pittsfield Fire Chief Looks Back On Three Decades Of Service

Pittsfield, Massachusetts Fire Chief Robert Czerwinski, 63, is retiring this week after 32 years with Berkshire County’s largest fire department, the past nine as its leader. The city is currently is waiting for Civil Service results from its last Chiefs assessment testing in May to find his successor. In the interim, Senior Deputy Fire Chief Dan Garner will take the helm. Czerwinski spoke with WAMC about his thoughts on the city’s fire preparedness, what he’ll remember most, and what’s changed since he walked into Pittsfield’s fire station for the first time in 1987.
