Departing Berkshire Regional Planning Commission Leader Looks To Future

Jim Levulis
Karns presents the commission's master plan in 2014.

Nathaniel Karns, 65, left the office of the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission for the final time on Friday, ending a 24-year run as the organization’s executive director.

The Commission is made up of representatives from 32 communities in the county. It organizes their needs, working to find collaborative soluations and grant funds. One of its accomplishments during Karns’ tenure was the establishment of a collaborative county health program. WAMC spoke with Karns to get a sense of what is next for both his successor, Thomas Matuszko, and the commission itself.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
