The Vermont Department of Public Safety is reminding fall hikers to be prepared for wintry conditions at higher elevations.
Police say waterproof boots with traction, and not sneakers, extra layers of clothing, a headlamp, map and compass may be needed this time of year for a safe and successful hike.
Conditions can be much colder and windy on upper trails than at the trailhead.
The department's search and rescue coordinator says there were several search and rescue incidents last fall involving unprepared hikers.
Officials also remind hikers that days are getting shorter so hikers should get an early start. Last weekend two hikers called for help near Underhill State Park when their hike continued into dark and they did not have headlamps.
