Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey is calling President Obama's efforts to tighten controls on guns a step in the right direction, but says Congress must do more.
Healey says licensing everyone who sells guns is a common-sense measure that is long overdue. In a December interview with WAMC, Healey called on citizens to urge Congress to act on gun control legislation, including expanded background checks.
“I think it’s a moral question for our country as people continue to get killed every day,” Healey said. “Absolutely there is so much more we can do and should do on this.”
Healey is also praising the President’s efforts to address mental illness, which she says is the root cause of some, but not all, of the most horrific mass shootings.
Republican leaders are slamming the President saying he is overstepping his authority while the NRA says the efforts would not have prevented any of the recent high-profile mass shootings.
