Connecticut’s Secretary of the State Denise Merrill is coming under fire from Republicans after proposing a revamp of how cities and towns handle elections. Under the Democrat's proposed legislation, the current system of locally elected, partisan registrars of voters would be scrapped.Republican representative Richard Smith, a ranking member on the General Assembly’s Government Administration and Elections Committee says Secretary Merrill needs to deal with her own issues and clean up her office first. He was referring to reports in the Hartford Courant that Merrill allowed a Bridgeport Democratic leader to remain a notary despite failing to report felony drug convictions.
“That’s just politics at work as far as I can tell,” Merrill said. “I don’t think there’s anything to any of that and it doesn’t matter. It has nothing to do with election process.”
Calling them “half-baked” Connecticut’s GOP chairman says Merrill’s proposals should be scrapped.
