Sen. Blumenthal's Abortion Act To Go Before Judiciary Committee

Supporters of a bill that would prohibit a government body from passing a law prohibiting access to abortions or the operation of an abortion clinic will testify before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal introduced the Women’s Health Protection Act in November. If enacted it would make any law restricting access to abortion services or abortion clinics unlawful. The Democrat from Connecticut says the some 200 laws passed in 27 states over the past three years aimed at restricting access are having ‘disastrous’ consequences.

“They are political interference with the rights of women to seek medical care that they need and deserve,” Blumenthal said during a conference call Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, a bill designed to create a new abortion clinic buffer zone was filed in Massachusetts Monday after the Supreme Court struck down the existing law in June.
