A Massachusetts man has been charged with the attempted murder of a Westchester County police officer, and he faces other felony charges. This comes after an incident Monday on the Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle.

The 22-year-old Springfield, Massachusetts man is being held without bail in the Westchester County Jail after he allegedly drove off at high speed as a county police officer was partially inside his car attempting to take him into custody for not having a valid license. A police spokesman says the officer managed to climb inside the car to avoid being dragged at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. With a door still open, the spokesman says Kevin Santos is accused of swerving across both lanes of the highway and on to the shoulder, accelerating and then braking hard, in an apparent effort to eject the officer from the car. Following the incident, officials say they found 9,000 envelopes of heroin inside the car. The police officer was taken to the hospital but was not seriously injured.
