Newburgh Opposes Thruway Authority As Lead Agency In Pipeline Project

Opposition to the state plan for the Thruway Authority to be lead agency in the environmental review of the proposed Pilgrim Pipeline along the superhighway is mounting as the Newburgh City Council is against it.

The council will vote on Monday to call on the state Department of Environmental Conservation to conduct the review.

Councilwoman Jeannie Abrams said the DEC has the expertise in these matters.

“It’s just that the Thruway Authority has no expertise in environmental issues. It is the Department of Environmental Conservation that does have the mandate to protect our environment. They should be the lead agency,” she said.

The Newburgh council is expected to formally voice its concern at Monday night’s session.

The resolution is virtually identical to one adopted recently by the Kingston Common Council.
