With a new capacity zone set to take effect May 1st, a New York Congressman Wednesday afternoon plans to deliver community concerns directly to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney will deliver the letters from Hudson Valley constituents, local elected officials, and communities in opposition to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s order that will result in the New York Independent System Operator creating a new a new capacity zone in the lower Hudson Valley. Maloney notes that implementation of the new zone would impose a $230 million increase in energy costs for the region in the first year alone, and nearly $500 million in increased costs over a three-year period. A Central Hudson spokesman has said the new zone could raise electric rates up to 6 percent or higher for residential customers and 10 percent or higher for large industrial customers.
