Bystanders grab gunman after man shot in NY store

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Police are crediting bystanders with subduing a gunman after he opened fire inside a Hudson Valley store and wounded a man during a robbery attempt.

City of Newburgh police say 21-year-old Thomas Rodriquez Jr. was outside the South Side Deli Tuesday night when a man approached him and demanded money. Rodriquez ran into the store and the gunman followed.

The two men struggled before two other men inside the store joined in to help Rodriquez. Police say three shots were fired as the struggle moved outside, with Rodriquez suffering gunshot wounds to both legs.

The bystanders disarmed the gunman and held him until police arrived.

Officers say Rodriquez is expected to recover.

Police charged 22-year-old Adrian Coolidge Jr. of Newburgh with assault and attempted robbery. He was in custody pending his arraignment.
