Legionnaire’s disease has been detected in Albany County.

The Albany County Department of Health confirms two county residents have tested positive for legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease. Albany County Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Elizabeth Whalen says  one of the individuals has died but the exact cause of death has not been confirmed. She says county health has worked with the New York State Department of Health to launch an environmental investigation.

Initial assessment has linked both cases to the Promenade assisted living facility in Albany, where samples of water have revealed preliminary positive results for legionella. Final culture results should be available within a week.  The agencies are working with the facility directors to minimize risk to other residents of the facility.
