Former U.S. Secretary of Education John King

Former U.S. Secretary of Education John King is running for governor in Maryland. King, a Democrat, was the New York State Education Commissioner from 2011 to 2014, when he was tapped to serve in the Obama administration.

As commissioner, King got mixed reviews from New Yorkers, particularly for his implementation of Common Core learning standards, and for tying teacher evaluations to student performance on standardized tests.

The 46-year-old and his family have since settled in Silver Spring, Maryland. He’s one of several Democrats running to replace Republican Governor Larry Hogan, whose two-term limit is up in 2022.
