Vermont Governor Phil Scott is well-positioned to win a third two-year term, according to a new statewide poll.

The Republican leads Progressive/Democratic Lieutenant Governor David Zuckerman 55 percent to 24 percent, with 16 percent of voters undecided. Scott has a 68 percent approval rating in the poll. The race to replace Zuckerman is much closer, with Democrat Molly Gray leading Republican Scott Milne 35-31, with 24 percent of voters undecided.

Scott was asked about the poll numbers at his COVID-19 briefing Tuesday.

"While you might be the hero this week, you might be the villain next week. Perception changes, so again, it's good information to have, good for your ego, but at the same time you have to focus what you're doing, doing it for the right reasons, not following polls, and that's what I've done throughout my political life, and that's while I'll continue to do now," he said.

At the same time, former Vice President Joe Biden has a 56-to-32 percent edge over President Donald Trump – closely tracking the 2016 election margin in the state. The VPR-Vermont PBS 2020 poll ran from September 3 to September 15, and has a margin of error of 4 points.
