Under a new law in New York, the age to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products is going up.

Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the law on Tuesday, raising the purchase age from 18 to 21 for tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vaping products. The law will take effect in 120 days statewide. The American Lung Association says the law, which passed the state Legislature this spring, is expected to reduce tobacco use among teenagers by 12 percent, and the American Cancer Society says the law will counter the statistic that 95 percent of smokers begin the habit before they reach the age of 21.

On Tuesday, Massachusetts state lawmakers held a hearing on legislation that would ban the sale of flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, anywhere in the state except for smoking bars.
