In an unprecedented move to examine parishioners’ beliefs, Pope Francis is calling on bishops to measure what Catholics think about matters facing modern families, including many issues that go against the norm of the church.
According to a report by the Religion News Service, Pope Francis wants bishops to poll parishioners to gauge how the church is reaching out to divorced and remarried couples, unmarried couples living together and same-sex couples and their children.
Diocesan spokesman Ken Goldfarb says the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is taking up the issue at its fall gathering in Baltimore, with Bishop Hubbard in attendance. Political consultant Libby Post thinks the Pope “sees the writing on the wall,” and change is inevitable.
The bishops have until January to gather responses to the Pope’s 38-question survey, which will be sent to the Vatican ahead of a meeting next fall on Catholic family life.
