Rouses Point, NY – As you travel north into Canada along Lake Champlain, the last fort to stand sentinel over the waterway barely stands. Fort Montgomery's bastions are crumbling and it's private owners cannot afford to refurbish the historic site. Historians saddened by its condition also cringe at a moniker it cannot shake off - Fort Blunder. Many believe the oft-told tale that the fort was mistakenly built in Canada....and that it's in Canada. But neither is true. There was a Fort Blunder, and it was on the same site. And that fort WAS built in Canada. North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley took a recent tour of Fort Montgomery to explore the mythology of it's nickname, and find out why it's falling apart.
