Unprecedented Growth At ESPN Under Bodenheimer

George Bodenheimer saw the company from all angles, from the bottom to the very top, in his 33 years with ESPN, including as its longest tenured president from 1998-2011, a period of exponential growth in sports and for the company itself.

Back at the beginning, Bodenheimer was driving TV personalities around Connecticut. But as he demonstrates in his new book Every Town Is a Sports Town: Business Leadership at ESPN, from the Mailroom to the Boardroom, Bodenheimer took every opportunity he could on the way up and wound up leaving his fingerprint on the entire sports landscape.

Now, ESPN is so much more than a fledgling cable network – an app, radio network, website, and ubiquitous player in the world of sports.

A lifelong resident of the Capital Region, Ian joined WAMC in late 2008 and became news director in 2013. He began working on Morning Edition and has produced The Capitol Connection, Congressional Corner, and several other WAMC programs. Ian can also be heard as the host of the WAMC News Podcast and on The Roundtable and various newscasts. Ian holds a BA in English and journalism and an MA in English, both from the University at Albany, where he has taught journalism since 2013.
