Albany, NY – OPENING BILLBOARD & EDUCATION HEADLINES - Glenn Busby (2:00)
"MAKING REFORM WORK: THE CASE FOR TRANSFORMING AMERICAN HIGHER EDUCATION"
Part Two: A College Degree In Three and Renewing the Debate to Save Money -
For many families, the cost of a college education approaches the price of some homes, and parents struggle to foot the bills. That's why some students and families are considering a new approach to save time and money. And they are finding some help, as more colleges and universities around the country offer programs to speed up degrees and save money.
While many options are available, one approach is for students to complete their undergraduate degree in three years, instead of four.
Among the proponents of getting a degree, in three, is U-Penn's, Dr. Robert Zemsky. Over Dr. Zemsky's 40-year career, he's pioneered the use of market analysis for higher education, served as the University of Pennsylvania's Chief Planning Officer, and been the founding director of Penn's Institute for Research on Higher Education. He was also the convener of the Pew Higher Education Roundtable, chair of The Learning Alliance, and member of the U.S. Secretary of Education's Commission on the Future of Higher Education.
We spoke with Dr. Zemsky last week about what he believes went wrong with that commission, and his displeasure with its results.
This week, he tells us about the ideas he thinks should have come from that body of higher education thinkers. The ideas he writes about in his latest book, "Making Reform Work." It's published by Rutgers University Press.

COMEDY ESSAY - SEQUEL:
"SO YOU WANT TO GET A PH.D. IN THE HUMANITIES: NINE YEARS LATER"
Last week, we featured a portion of the humorous and sometimes dark comedy from the animated video circulating on the Internet called, "So You Want to Get a PHD in the Humanities."
This week, we have Dr. William Pannapacker's sequel - "So You Want to Get a Ph.D. in the Humanities: Nine Years Later."
Dr. Pannapacker is an Associate Professor of English at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He's been a critic of ivory tower academia for two decades, often writing in "The Chronicle of Higher Education" under the pen name Thomas H. Benton. He recently discontinued use of that pen name. Here is his sequel - "Nine Years Later."
