Sports Report: American Pharoah Draws Post 2 For Travers Stakes

Patrick Garrett/WAMC

Horse Racing:

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah is the overwhelming 1-5 favorite in a 10-horse field entered for Saturday's Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.

American Pharoah will start from the No. 2 gate in an attempt to become only the second Triple Crown winner to go on to win the prestigious Travers. Whirlaway won the 1941 Travers after sweeping the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

At Tuesday night's post-position draw, Frosted was made the second choice at 6-1 and Texas Red the third choice at 8-1.

The field from the rail out is Upstart, American Pharoah, Mid Ocean, Texas Red, Frammento, Frosted, Keen Ice, Tale of Verve, King of New York and Smart Transition.

American Pharoah has won eight straight races.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, Houston crushed the Yankees 15-1, Toronto edged Texas 6-5 to give the Blue Jays a 1 game lead in the AL East over the Yankees, the White Sox beat Boston 5-4, Seattle slid past Oakland 6-5, the Angels won against Detroit 8-7, Minnesota defeated Tampa Bay 11-7, and it was Kansas City over Baltimore 3-2.

In the National League, the Mets slid past Philadelphia 6-5 to continue to lead the NL East by 5 ½ games over Washington who beat San Diego 8-3, Colorado bested Atlanta 5-1, the Dodgers trumped Cincinnati 5-1, Miami won against Pittsburgh 5-2, St. Louis topped Arizona 9-1, and it was the Cubs over San Francisco 8-5.

In interleague play, Cleveland beat Milwaukee 11-6.

NFL:

Even as negotiations aimed at settling the NFL's "Deflategate" scandal drag on, lawyers are seeking every legal advantage in a quest to win over a federal judge. Repeating arguments they made at a hearing one week ago, lawyers for the league, the players' union and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady are sending Judge Richard Berman letters reminding him of their legal positions.

After 14 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne is looking forward to a fresh start with the New England Patriots. Wayne says he talked to several NFL teams before deciding to sign a one-year contract with the Pats. He says it was the best fit.

Lawyers for a man who investigators believe was with former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez when two men were killed in Boston say he has been granted immunity by prosecutors in the 2012 double shooting. In a court document filed this in a Florida lawsuit, lawyers for Alexander Bradley say they have given Hernandez's civil lawyers "the agreement for immunity" contained in a letter between a Boston prosecutor and Bradley's lawyer.

The Steelers have signed four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick to a one-year deal. Pittsburgh needed a backup to Ben Roethlisburger after Bruce Gradkowski injured his none-throwing hand in Sunday's preseason win over Green Bay.

IndyCar:

According to his brother, late IndyCar driver Justin Wilson saved six lives Tuesday by donating his organs. The 37-year old driver died Monday night from a head injury suffered when a piece of debris struck him in the head during a race the previous day at Pocono Raceway.

Tennis:

Top-ranked Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic are seeded Number 1 for the U.S. Open. The year's last major tournament starts on Monday. Romania's Simona Halep is seeded second, followed by Maria Sharapova and the 2014 runner-up, Caroline Wozniacki. Roger Federer is seeded second on the men's side, with Andy Murray third and last year's runner-up, Kei Nishikori, fourth.

Little League:

ESPN has removed Curt Schilling from its broadcast team for the Little League World Series because of an anti-Muslim tweet. Schilling retweeted a post that said, "Only 5-10% of Muslims are extremists. In 1940, only 7% of Germans were Nazis. How'd that go?" The post was soon removed from his Twitter feed.

MLS:

The New York Red Bulls have hired Tony Jouaux as their strength and conditioning coach. Sporting director Ali Curtis announced the hiring on Tuesday. Jouaux, who spent four years in the same role with the Chicago Fire, replaces Albert Altarriba Bartes, who took a job with a university in his native Spain. He most recently served as assistant coach and fitness coach for the Des Moines Menance in the Premier Development League (PDL).

Gambling:

New Jersey has struck out again in its efforts to legally offer sports betting. A federal appeals court panel in Philadelphia on Tuesday upheld the federal ban on sports betting in all but four states.

But the 2-to-1 ruling left the door open for New Jersey to further appeal the matter to the full Third Circuit appeals court. State Sen. Ray Lesniak predicted that will happen shortly. New Jersey has been trying since 2009 to offer legal sports betting at its casinos and racetracks to help both struggling industries.

At issue in the appeal was whether a 2014 New Jersey law repealing prohibitions against sports gambling violates a 1992 federal ban in all states except Nevada, Oregon, Montana and Delaware.

Swimming:

Officials say a 17-year-old open water swimmer from New Jersey became the first person to swim a course of just over 20 miles through what's known as the New York Bight.

Ridgewood resident Charlotte Samuels began her journey around 7 a.m. Saturday and finished before 5 p.m.

Samuels dove into the waters of Long Island's Atlantic Beach and swam to the Jersey shore town of Sea Bright in just under 10 hours. She says her official time was far less than the projected 12- to 16-hour swim she was expecting.

Samuels says she hopes to help create a marathon swim on the East Coast to rival the English Channel crossing, which she completed as part of her 2014 Triple Crown finish.

The New York Bight extends from Montauk Point to the Cape May Inlet.

NBA:

The NBA has fined the Los Angeles Clippers $250,000 after an investigation found the team had violated league rules while trying to re-sign DeAndre Jordan last month. The league says the Clippers had made a presentation to the then-free agent on July 2 that improperly included a potential third-party endorsement opportunity. Jordan eventually decided to stay with the Clippers after initially verbally committing to a deal with the Dallas Mavericks.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Atlanta beat Connecticut 71-57.
