Sports Report: NFL Preseason, Brady Completes One Pass

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, the Yankees beat Cleveland 8-6, Toronto doubled up Oakland 4-2, Texas edged Minnesota 6-5, and it was the Angels over Kansas City 7-6.

In the National League, the Mets bested Colorado 12-3, Pittsburgh doubled up St. Louis 10-5, the Cubs topped Milwaukee 9-2, Cincinnati won against the Dodgers 10-3, and it was San Francisco over Washington 3-1.

The Boston Red Sox will begin a 10-game homestand tonight against the Seattle Mariners. Right-handed pitcher Joe Kelly will take the mound for the Red Sox. Left-hander Mike Montgomery will get the start for the Mariners.

NFL:

In the NFL, Detroit crumpled the Jets 23-3, Green Bay blasted New England 22-11, Tom Brady completed one of four passes before giving way to Jimmy Garoppolo - A day after appearing before a federal judge hearing the appeal of his "Deflategate" suspension, Washington beat Cleveland 20-17, Chicago trumped Miami 27-10, Baltimore defeated New Orleans 30-27, and it was San Diego over Dallas 17-7.

No need to adjust your television sets. Those are gold numbers at midfield in NFL exhibition games. Throughout the preseason and regular season, NFL fields will have gold 50s at midfield. It's to commemorate the 50th Super Bowl, which will be played next February in Santa Clara, California. The rest of the numbers on the field will remain white.

Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl receiver T.Y. Hilton has agreed to a five-year, $65 million contract extension. Hilton could have become a free agent after this season. Hilton has 214 receptions, 3,289 yards and 19 touchdowns in three seasons. Last season, he had 82 catches and seven TDs and set a career high with 1,345 yards.

Tonight at 7, the Giants are in Cincinnati and Carolina is in Buffalo.

PGA:

Dustin Johnson owns a one-stroke lead over David Lingmerth through one round of the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. Johnson eagled the par-5 16th hole en route to a 6-under 66. Russell Henley, Matt Kuchar, Scott Piercy and Harris English fired 68s, as did J.B. Holmes, Jason Day, Danny Lee and Matt Jones.

Amy Anderson and Sandra Changkija fired 7-under 65s and share the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour's Cambia Portland Classic. Anderson had five consecutive birdies on the front nine in her bogey-free round at Columbia Edgewater. Canadian teen star Brooke Henderson, Alison Lee and Julieta Granada are one stroke back.

MLS:

Major League Soccer has fined New York Red Bulls defender Damien Perrinelle and suspended him for two games for endangering the safety of an opponent in a 2-0 victory over New York City FC on Sunday night. Parrinelle will sit out games tomorrow against Toronto FC and on August 26th against the Chicago Fire.

Tennis:

Former top-five tennis player Todd Martin has a new challenge: Transforming the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum into a global mecca for all things tennis. The new CEO says he's focused on making the Newport facility live up to its international title.

Legal:

A judge has ruled that a $1.3 million home and 2005 Hummer owned by former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez can be sold as part of a lawsuit filed over the death of a man Hernandez has been convicted of killing. The judge yesterday authorized the sale of Hernandez's SUV and 7,100-square-foot home in North Attleborough.

Skiing:

Skiing champ Lindsey Vonn says she has fractured an ankle bone in a training crash in New Zealand. She's returning to her Vail, Colorado home to have the injury examined further.

It is the latest setback for the 30-year old, who returned from serious leg injuries to set the all-time women's World Cup win record last season. She also won her seventh World Cup downhill title.

Horse Racing:

Sam the Bugler at Saratoga Race Course is due to not return for the remaining days of the racing season. The Times Union reports that he is on leave from the track as he attends a personal matter.
