In the NBA, Boston bested Sacramento 106-84, the Clippers beat New York 99-78, Indiana topped Miami 106-95, Houston won against Charlotte 102-83, Milwaukee defeated Cleveland 96-80, San Antonio edged New Orleans in overtime 95-93, and it was Oklahoma City over Phoenix in overtime 137-134.
NHL:
Over on the ice, the Rangers topped Florida 5-2, the Islanders bested Winnipeg 5-2, Toronto edged Boston in a shootout 4-3, Tampa Bay defeated Buffalo 5-1, Pittsburgh beat Carolina 2-1, Columbus bested Minnesota 3-1, Detroit topped New Jersey 3-1, San Jose blanked Anaheim 3-0, Dallas shut out Arizona 6-0, Colorado skated past Philadelphia in overtime 4-3, and it was Calgary over Edmonton in overtime 4-3.
The Winter Classic featuring the Washington Capitals and the Chicago Blackhawks is expected to start at 1 p.m. today at the Washington Nationals Park. But local forecasts call for sun which could see the game delayed up to 90 minutes due to glare off of the ice.
NFL:
Doug Marrone has stepped down as coach of the Buffalo Bills after leading the team to its first winning season in 10 years. The Bills finished 9-7 in Marrone's only season with the team, but the franchise missed the playoffs for the 15th consecutive season. Marrone had an opt-out clause in his contract after the team was purchased by Terry and Kim Pegula from the estate of Hall of Fame owner Ralph Wilson in March.
NCAA:
The College Football Playoffs start tonight when Oregon will take on Florida State in the Rose Bowl at 5 p.m. and then Ohio State goes head to head with Alabama in the Sugar Bowl at 8:30 p.m. The winners will face each other in the first ever College Football Playoff Championship.
