Stockbridge Fires Fire Chief Following Scam

The fire chief of Stockbridge, Massachusetts has been fired after falling prey to a scam.

Donald Chabon, chairman of the town’s select board, says he felt the firing of Fire Chief Ernest "Chuckie" Cardillo was justified after the town found out he had overspent dramatically on unnecessary equipment from a fraudulent company.

“I mean, it wasn’t just one scam. It was multiple scams over an extended period of time. And not to call attention to it, which was readily available to him, and not to stop it – which was easily an option.”

Chabon says  while five of the town’s 15 volunteer firefighters resigned in protest, four former volunteer firefighters have stepped into their place. The interim fire chief is former deputy chief Neil Haywood.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
