Springfield Will Show Movies In Parks This Summer

WAMC

Drive-in theaters and other outdoor movie screenings are making a comeback during the pandemic.

Pop-up outdoor movie theaters in shopping mall parking lots, fields, and stadiums across the country have drawn large audiences.

The city of Springfield is planning to show movies in three public parks this summer – Forest Park, Riverfront Park and Blunt Park – according to the city’s parks director Pat Sullivan.

"We have chosen locations where we can do safe social distancing," explained Sullivan.

A schedule will be announced shortly.  The movies will be shown on a 37-foot tall inflatable projection screen.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
