The mayor of Pittsfield, Massachusetts says Berkshire County’s largest community is developing a coronavirus preparedness plan.

Linda Tyer says there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Pittsfield. City and school officials met this week to firm up their responses to the disease should it emerge.

“We would rely heavily on the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and we would follow very closely their protocols for how to proceed,” said Tyer.

While the state says risk of the virus remains low in Massachusetts, a Pittsfield family who visited rural China and returned without coronavirus symptoms remains under quarantine until March 9th.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
