The town of Lee, Massachusetts has officially responded to residents angry over a municipal worker removing lawn signs from private property.
At Tuesday’s select board meeting, aggrieved townsfolk expressed frustration with building commissioner BJ Church confiscating signs without warning.
“The select board can put a stop to this charade right now with a vote," said President of the Lee Historical Society Bill Mathews. "Simply pass a vote finding that there have been misinterpretations of the bylaw that have led to overly zealous enforcement. We're sorry for any pain we have inflicted, and hope to make amends.”
The town has since posted the following statement to its website: “If you feel you were affected by the recent enforcement action regarding lawn signs, please contact or visit the building department to pick up your sign. There will be no fees or penalties to retrieve your sign.”
