In New York, a community grocery store in the planning stages has found a home in a former car dealership in Kingston.

The Kingston Food Co-op will take over 708 Broadway in Midtown, giving the co-op just north of 10,000 square feet. Full memberships cost $150 while a Solidarity Share membership, which is reserved for income-qualified individuals, is $15. Membership has grown from 10 individuals in April to 290 by mid-December. The Co-op wants to reach 1,000 members before opening. It will serve as a community gathering place and full-service grocery store that offers locally sourced foods and grocery staples. The Co-op is led by a council, and all co-op members have voting rights to determine council representation.
