Former Vermont Lieutenant Governor Barbara Snelling has died at age 87.
Mark Snelling, says his mother died surrounded by family Monday at her home in South Burlington.
Snelling was the widow of Governor Richard Snelling who died in office in 1991.
She was lieutenant governor from 1993 to 1997. She ran for governor in 1996, a campaign that was cut short by a cerebral hemorrhage.
She then served as a state senator for two terms until a stroke forced her to resign.
In offering its condolences, the Vermont GOP said Snelling’s “…deep dedication to Vermonters will continue to serve as an inspiration…”
Governor Peter Shumlin said Barbara Snelling “…will always be remembered for her compassion and dedication and for overcoming great personal tragedy to continue to give back to the state she loved...”
A Massachusetts native and longtime Shelburne resident, Snelling also held several leadership posts in education, chairing her regional school district and serving on the state Board of Education.
