It is mud season in the Adirondack High Peaks, and state officials are urging hikers to protect trails from erosion.
The Department of Environmental Conservation is encouraging hikers to walk single file in the center of muddy trails.
In an interview for WAMC’s Spring Series the Adirondack Mountain Club’s Wes Lampman said walking around the mud is the worst thing hikers can do. "It's basically confining damage and erosion to the very center of the trail.”
The DEC reports that there is still snow and ice melting above 3,000 feet.
