SUNY Canton Campus In Lockdown

SUNY Canton in Potsdam has canceled all classes for the remainder of today, Thursday, and the campus is in lockdown following death threats via the social media platform Yik Yak.

Students in classes at the start of the lock down have been advised to stay in place and lock their doors.

The Watertown Daily News reports that students notified campus police of a death threat made via the social media app early Thursday morning.  Following a second threat, the campus was locked down.

The newspaper reports that the message on the app, which is popular nationally with college students, told SUNY Canton students that the sender planned to kill himself Thursday, but before doing that would take out as many other students as possible.

Students, faculty and staff are receiving updates throughout the day.
