Training To Detect Possible Invasive Insect Set

Courtesy Vermont Department of Forest Parks and Recreation

A training session has been set to for volunteers to be on alert for an invasive insect.

The hemlock woolly adelgid is an invasive insect  that is causing widespread mortality of hemlock trees in NY and the eastern U.S.

On July 31 the Adirondack Mountain Club will host monitoring training for citizen scientists at its Lake George office.

The hemlock woolly adelgid has not yet been reported in the Adirondack Park. Volunteers are needed and will be trained by biologists and forest ecologists to detect early signs and symptoms of infestations.

Participants will then adopt a survey area.

The training is being done with the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program, NYS Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation and Cornell University.

The training is from 10:30 am to 3 pm. Please RSVP by July 28.  For more information or to register, contact Cathy Pedler at cathy@adk.org, 518-449-3870.
