Plattsburgh's community bonfire "Tannen-Boom" is lit at dusk

After a week’s delay, the city of Plattsburgh held its first Tannen-Boom bonfire winter event this weekend.

The Plattsburgh Department of Public Works collects discarded Christmas trees at the end of the year at no charge. This year the city decided to use some of them for a public beach party featuring a giant bonfire. Mayor Chris Rosenquest, who lit the trees inside a giant teepee, consulted with the DEC on environmental safety and air quality and followed strict safety protocols.

“There’s one big tree right in the middle that’s probably buried about eight feet into the ground that kind of keeps up the structure. And as you can see the berm around keeps people back in case something does fall over. We’re being pretty safe here. We have fire and police on site to just keep things safe.”

A large sliding hill was also built up adjacent to the bonfire site.
