Federal prosecutors say convicted former 72-year-old New York State Senate Leader Dean Skelos has tested positive for the new coronavirus and will be released from prison into home custody.

The government notified a Manhattan federal judge Wednesday that Skelos was in quarantine after testing positive April 8. He has reportedly been symptom-free. Prosecutors say the U.S. Bureau of Prisons said Skelos will be approved for furlough and home confinement once his proposed residence is approved by U.S. Probation Department authorities.

Skelos, a Republican from Long Island, has been serving a four-year and three-month prison term at the Otisville minimum-security facility in Orange County. He was convicted of extortion, wire fraud, and bribery in 2018 following reports that he strong-armed companies into providing do-nothing jobs for his son, Adam.
