More than three dozen people are hitting the waters of a popular Adirondack lake to search for an aquatic invasive species that can adversely impact water quality.
Dave Wick, executive director of the Lake George Park Commission, says Wednesday about 40 people will spend the next week and a half looking underwater off sandy areas of the lake for Asian clams. Wick says there are hundreds of such areas around the 32-mile lake.
Wick says the latest effort to find and eradicate Asian clams involves three boats crewed by the state commission's staff, members of nonprofit groups and volunteers.
Last Friday, the Lake George Association announced it was pledging $90,000 over the next three years to bolster local support of the park commission's boat inspection program aimed at keeping invasive species out of the lake.
