The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it has no objections to the decommissioning plans developed by the owners of the closed Vermont Yankee nuclear plant.
The NRC has released a letter to Entergy Corp. citing the company's plans for radioactive waste, emergency planning and mothballing the plant for decades.
While the NRC appears satisfied, the state of Vermont has challenged Entergy on at least two aspects of how the company is handling the plant's closing.
The state has questioned its use of money from its decommissioning fund for ongoing expenses like property taxes. And it wants to delay standing down on emergency planning.
The NRC’s letter comes nearly a year after a public hearing in Brattleboro on the future of the reactor, which closed permanently at the end of 2014.
