Two state leaders in Massachusetts and Connecticut are among the numerous guests scheduled to attend President Obama’s final State of the Union address Tuesday.Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey is heading to Washington as a guest of Democratic Congressman Richard Neal. Elected in 2014 and considered a rising political star, Healey hopes to spotlight the state’s ongoing battle with opioid abuse.

“It is my view that there are too many pills out there,” Healey said during a December 2015 interview with WAMC. “That’s a problem because four out of five of our heroin users actually started with prescription pain medication. So we need safe prescribing practices.”

As a supporter of many of the administration’s initiatives, including gun reform, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy has been invited to sit near First Lady Michelle Obama.  WAMC will carry the address live at 9 p.m.
