While some are welcoming the mild December temperatures with open arms, area ski resorts are not so happy with the mercury level. The ski industry on the whole is way behind where it normally is this time of year because of the warm temperatures, according to Tyler Fairbank of the Fairbank Group, which operates Cranmore Mountain Resort, Bromley Mountain and Jiminy Peak. He says 10 to 15 percent of seasonal revenue comes during the approaching Christmas and New Year’s period.
“We’ve certainly started to take a look at cash flows more closely and where we’re at this year compared to last year or other years where we’ve had slower starts and make sure that we manage the business well,” Fairbank said. “It’s not our first rodeo.”
Still able to offer some of Jiminy’s summer attractions, Fairbank says forecasting shows winter temperatures will linger once they arrive. With five days under its belt this season, Jiminy plans to reopen skiing this weekend using snowmakers.
