Pittsfield’s annual Cop on Top event returns Saturday for a fifth year. Proceeds from the two-day event support Special Olympic athletes. As part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run program, Cop on Top puts members of the Pittsfield Police Department and other Berkshire area law enforcement up on the roof of the Walmart in Pittsfield for two days. Pittsfield Police investigator John Bassi’s son is a Special Olympic athlete.

“They’re very happy people and they’re great people to be around,” Bassi said. “It’s a wonderful experience and it’s not something that you can describe to somebody.”

A torch lighting ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Hubbard Ave. store kicks off the event’s $50,000 fundraising goal.
