Students Meet With Conn.'s Malloy To Seek Financial Aid

CT.gov

Students brought to the U.S. illegally as children are asking Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy to help them obtain institutional financial aid.

Six students met privately with the Democrat in his office on Tuesday. They're part of a group called Connecticut Students for a DREAM, which persuaded Malloy to meet with them after appearing at several of his recent town hall events.

Faye Phillip of Stamford, who came to the U.S. from Trinidad and Tobago, said she was attending community college to study accounting, but had to stop because she ran out of money. Because she's not a legal citizen, Phillip is illegible for institutional financial aid.

In 2011, Malloy signed a bill that allowed such students to pay the less expensive, in-state tuition at Connecticut's public colleges and universities.
